Problems and solutions The challenges we faced
Time to market and feature parity with the website
The app needed to have the lowest possible time to market in order to guarantee feature parity with the website. To achieve this, the app’s content is presented in customized WebViews where the pages trigger a communication bridge with the app via WKScriptMessageHandler and JavascriptInterface. Non-invasive changes to the content structure do not require a new app build unless modifications to the communication bridge are needed.
Improved performance and resource consumption
The previous version of the app had been developed in hybrid mode, using a mechanism for downloading and rendering HTML templates at run-time. This architecture resulted in poor performance and higher resource consumption, such as data connection, storage space, and battery. In the new version of the app, we implemented a new native layer, with particular attention to optimizing performance and resource usage. The web layer was also optimized by adapting the website’s page logic to work within the app’s WebView.
Fragmentation between App News and Digital Edition
The Digital Edition features and the news features were initially split into two separate apps, leading to fragmentation among users, especially in terms of subscriptions, as well as lower efficiency in maintenance and future development. In the new version of the Gazzetta app, we unified the two apps into what became known as the "App Unica." To minimize maintenance and development time and costs, the Gazzetta app was reorganized into a target/flavor architecture, so that the functionalities reside in a shared codebase, with app-specific modules for styles and configurations.
Tablet support
Gazzetta app originally supported only smartphones. Once the Digital Edition features were introduced into the Gazzetta app, tablet support also became necessary. The app’s layouts were completely redesigned to support both smartphones and tablets, with the underlying code adapted to handle both screen types.
Project timeline The most important milestones
November 2025 - Consentless subscriptions

In-app purchase features improvement, with the introduction of a new type of subscription for users who wish to opt out of providing privacy consent to the app.
September 2025 - Dynamic templates for the Edicola section

The latest enhancement of the Digital Edition features introduces the ability to configure different templates of the Edicola section based on the day of the week. This functionality allows for displaying different configurations of the section, with the goal of promoting specific editions and/or supplements on targeted days. The development involved both the app and backend services.
April 2025 - Notification for the release of the new Gazzetta dello Sport edition

The second enhancement of the Digital Edition features concerns the introduction of a push notification sent as soon as the National edition becomes available, with the goal of increasing user engagement in the Edicola section. The backend systems generate and send the notification immediately after detecting the edition’s availability on the DE provider’s systems. This process is also fully automated.
February 2025 - Preview of the National edition of Gazzetta dello Sport

A new phase of development for the Digital Edition features begins. The first enhancement concerns the introduction of the preview of the National edition of Gazzetta dello Sport. The development involved the app, backend systems, and the provider’s systems. The preview edition is shown to the user only if the backend detects its availability on the DE provider’s system, automatically switching to the National edition as soon as it is published. The entire process is fully automated.
October 2024 - Integration with BlueShift for marketing notifications

The Blueshift SDK has been integrated into the app, opening a new engagement channel with users through targeted and personalized marketing notifications.
March 2024 - Release of the Edicola section

In version 4.1.0, the Digital Edition features are released, giving rise to the so-called "App Unica." For the first time, users can read both the website news and the digital version of La Gazzetta dello Sport within the same app. The Edicola section groups together the different editions of Gazzetta and its supplements in a tabbed structure that is easy for users to navigate. Version 4.1.0 is also the first to offer partial offline use, particularly for publications downloaded from the Edicola section and saved in its Archivio subsection. Alongside the Digital Edition, version 4.1.0 also introduced tablet support.
February 2024 - Migration from Airship to Firebase Cloud Messaging

The migration from Airship to Firebase Cloud Messaging was carried out as the push notification provider for the apps on both operating systems. In addition to the migration to the new SDK, some microservices were implemented to manage the topics to which users are subscribed.
March 2023 - New section Il Ciclista

For the first time, a vertical subscription is made available, dedicated specifically to a single section of the Gazzetta dello Sport website. The app was updated not only to support this type of subscription but also to further increase its flexibility, ensuring that its elements are displayed to the user in the appropriate form based on the subscriptions they have purchased.
December 2022 - Restyling of the purchase storefront

The latest round of app restyling focuses on the purchase storefront. The previous storefront, which consisted of a flat list of offers, was improved to provide greater visibility of the available subscription types and to allow the Marketing department to further customize the screen in order to improve product sales.
October 2022 - Restyling of the notifications section

The second round of restyling involves the notifications section and its related configuration screen for followed topics. The first improvement focuses on enhancing the usability of the inbox screen. The second improvement regards the notification settings screen, where topics are properly grouped to improve screen navigability.
September 2022 - Restyling of the navigation menu and G+ section

A restyling phase begins for several sections and screens of the Gazzetta app. The first round of restyling involves the navigation menu, reducing its verticality while introducing groups and element grids. In the same version, the G+ section is also updated, improving the app’s structure and leading to greater customization of screen headers.
April 2022 - Release of version 3.0.15

Version 3.0.15 is released on the App Store and Google Play.
