Problems and solutions The challenges we faced
Performance and resource optimization
The previous version of the app was developed with an outdated hybrid framework, and its monolithic architecture made maintenance and further development difficult. The new version of the app was built entirely natively, with a modular architecture based on frameworks and libraries, delivering maximum performance and greater flexibility in maintenance and the implementation of new features.
Unified user experience with the website
The user experience of the previous version of the app was inspired by Flipboard-style animations and content presentation. In the new version, the user experience was simplified and aligned with that of Corriere.it, providing app users with a design and user experience consistent with the website.
Collaboration with international teams and consultants
To ensure an effective workflow between the internal RCS team, the international development group, and the consultants, we introduced structured collaboration practices: weekly alignment meetings, shared project management tools, and a continuous integration pipeline that allowed all teams to work on the same codebase with transparency and timeliness.
Project timeline The most important milestones
May 2025 - Support for Apple promotional offers

Support for Apple promotional offers is implemented in the app. This new feature provides the Marketing department with an additional tool to offer subscriptions at advantageous prices to app users, in an effort to reduce churn rate.
May 2024 - New model for concurrent access management

The previous 'Family' access model has been evolved into a concurrent access management model. Users can now share their subscription with one or more devices simultaneously, depending on the type of plan they are paying for. A backend system notifies devices about which users are allowed to access the content and which should be blocked. This system enables greater control over subscription sharing across different apps and the website.
January 2024 - Migration to DailyMotion video player

The app’s native video player is replaced by DailyMotion’s player.
July 2023 - Support for offers purchased via App Store promotional codes

With the introduction of Apple Offer Codes, Corriere.it was updated to support purchases made outside the app. The development, carried out in collaboration with Apple, leverages Transaction Observers to detect purchases made outside the app as soon as it is launched. The transaction observer allows the app to take control of the payment queue and finalize the purchase within the app. The subscription management backend was also updated to handle promotional offers, which are the foundation of Apple’s Offer Code functionality.
November 2022 - Release of second version of the Podcast section

The new Podcast section replaces the one launched in May 2021. In this updated version, still based on the native player integrated with Spreaker’s REST APIs, modern multimedia content consumption features are introduced. These include series and episodes, playlists with autoplay, binge listening, and background listening via iOS Springboard controls and Android notification panel.
March 2022 - New Family access model

A new 'Family' access model is introduced. This model replaces the previous one based on the number of devices linked to a subscription and allows users to share subscriptions between primary and secondary accounts, depending on the purchased plan. The development of this feature involved both the app and the backend systems managing user subscriptions.
February 2022 - Integration with Piano

Piano is integrated into the app, complementing its existing integration on the website. Through Piano, Paywall features and user segmentation can be implemented. The native storefront is replaced with Piano templates that are injected into the app depending on the user’s segment. This gives the Marketing department more freedom to define subscription storefronts and deliver offers to users more effectively.
May 2021 - Release of first version of the Podcast section

The previous Podcast section, based on Spreaker’s web player, is replaced by a new fully native UI/UX section. The native player, built by integrating the app with Spreaker’s REST APIs, allows greater control over content consumption for both subscribers and non-subscribers, while fully native screens provide more efficient layouts in terms of performance and a more enjoyable user experience.
January 2021 - Enhanced push notification features with Airship

Airship is integrated for the first time in one of the group’s apps. As both a replacement and successor to Accengage, Airship is an advanced system for sending push notifications to app users. Beyond editorial notifications, Airship allows targeting a wide range of user segments. Marketing can use Airship to define user segments and send notifications with offers and special content within the app.
June 2020 - Introduction of Sign in with Apple

Corriere.it introduces Sign in with Apple. This authentication method, which required updates to the app’s authentication backend, complements the already existing Google Sign In and Facebook Login.
December 2019 - Support for Dark Mode / Dark Theme

Corriere.it is the first of our apps to support Dark Mode / Dark Theme on iOS and Android. The app introduced this functionality shortly after the release of the first iOS and Android versions supporting dark themes, aiming to improve content readability and reduce battery consumption on OLED devices.
November 2019 - Release of deep-linking functionality

With the activation of deep-linking features, users can navigate within the app directly from Corriere.it’s website or by sharing article links. Specific deep-links were also implemented to allow Marketing to drive subscription offers within the app.
September 2019 - Integration with Subscribe with Google

For the first time in one of our app, Subscribe with Google is introduced. This new purchase and content access method allows users to subscribe directly via the Google Store using their Google account.
August 2019 - Release of version 6.3.9

Version 6.3.9 is released on the App Store and Google Play.
